2b. ALL – Enhancing the Skills Needed to be an Effective Compliance Officer (Intermediate)

A compliance professional must be competent, empowered, knowledgeable, and adequately resourced to be considered effective.  These traits are the result of specific skills and behaviors that can be developed and strengthened.  This lab explores the criteria regulators use to evaluate these four traits and then describes the specific skills and practical applications that demonstrate a compliance professional’s effectiveness.  In this lab, participants will develop a personalized plan that will help them improve their effectiveness in their role while decreasing regulatory liability.  The session will use case studies, examples, group discussions, and other application activities to:

  • Discuss the importance of the following skills for compliance officers: competence through judgment and program operation, empowerment through leadership and executive presence; knowledge through command of regulatory requirements; and the adequacy of resources through how they use, manage, and advocate for available resources.

  • Explore the specific skills associated with each trait, including techniques and practices to develop and strengthen those skills.

  • Share and discuss the conditions and behaviors that demonstrate each trait.

  • Develop a personal plan to be more effective and productive (including tools for prioritization and resource management).
